Sepang MotoGP 2022 practice day on Kodak Gold 200
Gear: Canon Demi EE17 (Half frame film camera)
FIlm: Kodak Gold 200.
These were taken during the free practice session on the GP weekend.
The Kodak Gold 200 has been truly renowned as the “gold standard” of film stocks.
This is my attempt to review this long lived film, but I know, pictures do tell a thousand words better than an essay of the same length.
I did accidentally opened the back cover of this camera essentially destroying 2 shots. Oops!
I know, this Canon Demi EE17 camera its 30mm lens is not the perfect camera to bring to a motorsport event, but I have other cameras for that.
Nonetheless, the performance of the fixed prime lens surprised me of how sharp the details were reproduced.
Sorry, this was supposed to be a review of my experience with the film. The color rendition of this Kodak Gold 200 is beautiful with its signature warm look without being too overpowering, with nice highlight roll off.
Grandstands are pretty empty, as it was a Friday, and being only a practice session there wasn’t much drama except for the consistent awesome roar from these powerful engines.
With the limitation of the 30mm lens, I did have to walk around a lot more to find interesting things and locations to get as close as I can.
There was a Suzuki previous MotoGP bike in their booth. And 2022 was the final year that Suzuki was competing in MotoGP.
Then there’s the Yamaha R7 in Yamaha’s tent. Yamaha as of the date of this blog still is not selling this bike officially in Malaysia. Back to the film, the ISO 200 is not a big issue for me to capture this photo indoors as the F1.7 aperture on the lens surely is convenient.
There is a reason why Kodak Gold 200 has been the default film stock for most people. The price is not too expensive, there are still quite a lot of labs that does process these films very quickly at a very reasonable price. And it sure is a reliable film for most purposes.
